Abstract

Exceptional advances in the field of ultracold quantum gases have opened new frontiers in the understanding of modern quantum physics. The proposed project targets to use a highly magnetic atomic species, erbium (Er), to study strongly dipolar effects in few- and many- body physics. The choice of erbium has the advantage of combining the richness of the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) together with the huge knowhow available with atomic systems, harnessing moreover the particular strengths of the lanthanide (Ln) species for dipolar and quantum physics. The major research objectives planned within the Forschergruppe period are: Ultracold scattering in atomic and molecular (Feshbach) dipoles Creation and study of dipolar Feshbach molecules in reduced dimensionality Dipolar spinor Bose gases with Er From weakly to strongly correlated dipolar systems of Er
