Abstract

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive lung tumor prone to metastasize and with frequent relapse after initial response to chemotherapy. Activins are signaling molecules which regulate a number of important cell functions. Preliminary results from our collaborative group suggested that high activin A (ActA) levels in the blood of SCLC patients correlate with metastasis and shortened survival time. In our pilot studies, we also found that activin A (ActA) overexpression promotes lymphatic spread of human SCLC cells in mice. In the current project, we plan to investigate the exact biological role of ActA in the malignant behavior of human SCLC and, moreover, to determine the diagnostic and/or therapeutic significance of ActA in this aggressive lung tumor.
