Petar Hektorovics Ribanje: Übersetzung, Kommentar, Analyse

My project aims at a translation, commentary and analysis of a key text of the Croatian renaissance, Petar Hektorovc`s "Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje i raslike stvari ine slozene" (Editio princeps Venice 1568). This work consists of a main text, the travel poem "Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje" describing a sea voyage between several Dalmatian islands actually performed by the author and parallel to it his imaginary journey through the occidental tradition and the rising "Slavonic" literature, as well as of some shorter paratexts in Croatian, Latin and Italian whose structural relationship to the rain text has so far never been recognized. My analysis is based (a) on an accurate translation and (b) on a commentary of the concepts and. realities mentioned in the total text. It intends to show that this text is a symmetrical, carefully composed structure of high literary quality. The existing editions and adaptations, which are all rooted in the spirit of Croatian national philology, shall be as I hope superseded by this new edition, which shall assess Hektorovic`s status anew and reintegrate his work in the common European-literary tradition.
