This project was devoted to the dependence of the magnetic anisotropy energy in magnetic multilayer systems with respect to the interlayer distance. A total of 16 papers was published, one of which in Physical review Letters, eight as regular articles in the Physical Review B. Investigated were systems of practical importance such as (Fe, Co) on (Pd, Pt) substrates, but also a famous case in this field, namely Ni on Cu(100). In particular this paper got quite some recognition: it is cited in quite a few experimental publications almost as a necessary standard reference. The experience gained in this project also facilitated investigation of electric transport in magnetzic multilayer systems. The project was of crucial importance for the EU TMR-network "Interface Magnetism".
