Abstract
The sermons or commentaries of St. Augustin upon all 150 psalms are not only his most extensive opus, but also
belong to the most influential works of the Latin Church Fathers in the Middle Ages. Their popularity is reflected
in the rich manuscript tradition (400 manuscripts are known from the period up to the 12th century). Because of the
wide diffusion of the works, a critical edition of the opus meeting modern scholarly demands, is still required.
After the research on the middle and third parts the work on the first Quinquagena (en. 1-50) was begun, as part of
the previous project. Having collated about 16 manuscripts and having chosen a sample, by which we deduced the
criteria of the selection of further manuscripts to be collated, we established a sound (though relatively small) basis
for the planned edition in the CSEL. In the project for which we are here applying for support the collations will be
supplied, and the knowledge gained in studying the sample will be extended to the whole size of text. Our priority
is the edition of Enarrationes 21-32; these are of great interest to scholars, because in this section there are some
psalm-explanations in double version, a shorter commentary, and a sermon. Such a critical edition of the opus will
afford important new insights into the theological development and literary performance of the Bible-exegete
Augustin.
