Project title: Applications of Set Theory to Lattice Theory
ABSTRACT OF THE PROJECT
We are interested in approximating "complex" functions on algebraic structures (in particular: lattices) by "simple"
functions (in particular: polynomials). This interest is motivated by both theoretical and practical considerations.
Recent research on some outstanding problems in this field indicates that "meta-mathematical" techniques (i.e.,
tools from mathematical logic, in particular set theory) are intrinsically necessary to break new ground in this area.
Professor Saharon Shelah from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a leading expert mathematical logic, having
written several books and several hundred advanced research papers in this field. In the past the co-operation
between Professor Shelah and myself has been very fruitful, resulting in many joint papers.
