Abstract
Research project P 14392 PPA II. Richard GISSER 08.05.2000It is the objective of the follow-up project to
,Family and Family Politics in Austria" to survey the conflict areas between "private" and the ,public/economy".
Particular attention will be directed toward the individual motivation concerning parenthood. A further task is to
illuminate the needs of the family in the light of changes occurring within the structure of the labour-market.
Detailed examination will be carried out on the conflicting points on the compatibility between occupation and
family. The survey will include general views of value concerning marriage, family, new ways of cohabitation as
well as gender roles. Further emphasis win be the evaluation of the political measures carried out to support the
family. Recent measures to support the family (flexibilisation of working-time, paternal leave etc.) are to be
described in regard to the acceptance by the respondents. New measures concerning family politics which on one
hand are discussed actually as reactions to the most recent demographic transition (e. g. "financial support for
child-care for all" etc.) and which on the other hand passed on account of economic constraints ("Sparpaket" etc.)
are to be judged by the respondents.
Within the framework of the "Population Policy Acceptance Survey 2" the essential structures of the previous
project will be adhered to, so as to facilitate and ensure comparison with the results of the questioning of 1993.
Further, it is only on this basis that data processing at an international level, as foreseen at the European level, will
be possible. The survey will be realized by means of a standardized questionnaire which is provided by the
international PPA-working group. It may be extended by each country.
