In the civil town Carnuntum-Petronell archaeological excavations were carried out in two large-scale buildings, macellum and bath, during the 1939, 1956-1977 seasons, but detailed analysis of the structures and findings were never published. Questions about the relative and absolute chronology of the architectural sequences and the functional determinations of the rooms were never discussed by means of all archaeological informations. Reflections and discussions of these structures, which until now are publicated only in short reports, are more or less missing in international papers, a deficit, which does not comply with the significance of the findings and their context. In the hypothesis the structures in an enclosure of 1,4 ha are defined as two public buildings - macellum und bath - in the center of the civil town Carnuntum. The significance of these buldings in the central infrastructure installations is henceforth pointed up by the latterly ascertained location of the forum of the civil town Carnuntum in the area direct south. Furthermore the knowledge of the surrounding quarters with high-density areas is improved by extensive geophysical prospections. Analysis of the structures and findings, excavated in the past and enriched by modern archaeological, geophysical and bioarchaeological researches may offer new insights in the public buildings - in the hypothesis determined as macellum and bath -, their building history and functional determinations and thus in the building activities in public space. These insights, regarding espacially the integration in the central spatial planning may also refer to general questions of urbanism.
