Theory of the screenplay - Practise of the writers

My project is about the work of screenwriters in Hollywood. In order to analyse their work it is necessary to study the development of dramaturgy in film and the development of working conditions which are defined by the specific mode of production in Hollywood. My project goes further than the research on the mode of production in Hollywood did so far and much further than the theories on narration in film. I will look at those elements of narration as they appear in the screenplay. So far there is no theory of dramaturgy in film studies which goes beyond the research on schemes and basic principles and therefore there are no means to produce a microanalysis of a specific screenplay. This text is based on the thesis that dramaturgy and working conditions influence each other. This will be demonstrated with the help of a few case examples which will also show that the analysis of the specific styles of screenwriters only makes sense in this context. So this project will produce a prototype for the analysis of the dramaturgy of screenplays and corresponding films which does not exist except in manuals for the general public. My project will therefore provide a base for further specific research in this field.
