Abstract Final report

During the years 1997-2004, a regional survey was done on the inscriptions and the archaeology of the ancient city of Tavium and its territory. The project, which is planned for two years, will produce the first volume of the corpus of the inscriptions of Tavium and the territory of the Trokmoi, which was organized in 21 B.C. as the territory of the autonomous city of Tavium. The project will be finished in the mid of 2007. The collection of the inscriptions in the region, which should be covered by this volume and is the central area of the territory of the city including the city of Tavium itself, will be finished with two more research-campaigns in 2005 and 2006. The corpus of the inscriptions of Tavium and its territory will be published in the well known series of "Inschriften griechischer Städte aus Kleinasien". This volume will also include the testimonia for the city, its history and its coinage. The history of the city will be given in a comprehensive version, also the history of the scientific research in the Region, informations about the region itself and its social, economic, religious and cultural structures in ancient times. A catalogue will provide comprehensive historical and archaeological informations for settlements and findspots and by this way for the local and archaeological context of the inscriptions. Especially the presentation of the results of the regional surveys will be an innovative Aspect of the planned volume in comparison with other epigraphic editions. Only a small part of the epigraphic material of the region was yet published and a major part of these inscriptions is now lost. The systematic analysis of the inscriptions and their monuments will provide a much better possibility for the problematic dating of late antique and Byzantine inscriptions not only for the region of Tavium but for the whole of central Anatolia. The inscriptions and the informations to be published in the planned volume of the corpus will allow a much better understanding of the development of society, economy and culture in the important heartland of Asia Minor from Hellenistic to Byzantine times. Especially the important phenomena of the ethnogenesis and acculturation of the Galatian Trokmoi can be studied and also the impact of urbanisation and new infrastructure in Roman times. For Late Antiquity and Byzantine Anatolia the results of the research will give a major impact on our knowledge.
