Abstract Final report

The project aims at providing a commentary of Stifters "Die Mappe meines Urgroßvaters", only possible within the context of the HKG. The commentary is based on 2 texts, both detached from each other and established according to prevailing editing standards. These texts are published as vol. 6,1, and 6,2 of HKG. The last two versions of the "Mappe" (1864 resp. 1867/68) were neither printed nor discussed during Stifters lifetime. However, there is hardly another work by Stifter that could, through the texts genesis, give more information on Stifters literary method and his literary development. The comparison of the 4 versions can also show how Stifter s literary intentions changed over a period of 28 years. The commentary of the texts for the 3rd and 4th version will take this complex textual setting into account. The commentary is meant to provide a complete commentary: In accordance with the existing commentaries of the HKG, it is composed of a) a general commentary providing an overview and b) a special commentary providing information about specific text passages. a) general commentary: 1) description of the script (plus edition and annotation of the Paralipomena; special features of punctuation and orthography) 2) detailed information on the texts genesis and Stifters literary method. 3) Transmission (Johannes Aprent to Franz Hüller) 4) Sources and motivations (a. sujet: Stifters earlier stories, b. general comments on topographic issues, c. motivations: literary models, biographic reminiscences, models of love and relationships according to Stifter, scientific and pedagogical impacts, contemporary medical discourse, political contexts, schematic comparison of all 4 versions) b) special commentary (text passages) 1) commentary on Words: Historical dimension of the language used, foreign Words, dialect idioms, translation of foreign language passages. 2) Commentary on factual contexts: historic and mythologic figures, historical events and their backgrounds, commodities: clothing, furniture, currencies and food, botany and mineralogy, evidence of Stifters educational knowledge, his literary and scientific skills, references to myths, legends and fairy tales, identification and rectification of quotations.
