Abstract Final report

The proposed project is part of a larger project which has been undertaken by the applicant: "Edition of documents of the Aquilean Patriarchy up to 1251" for which the Austrian Academy of Sciences has started a series of publications. After two editions concerning the monasteries of Moggio and S. Maria at Aquileia, and after a third edition concerning the relationship of the patriarchy with the Republic of Venice, the present project deals again with territorial aspects, i. e. the collection and critical edition of those documents which reflect the relationship of the patriarchy with its western neighbours within the ecclesiastical province of Aquileia, above all those with its immediate neighbour, the Commune of Treviso. The relationships between these neighbours were very varied and are a typical example of the rivalry between two different political systems across the river Livenza which has been called border of Italy by historians when referring to the period in question. But despite laudable efforts in recent years this area of research still lacks an insufficient supply of documentation. The availably bibliography has again and again to rely on completely outdated prints, excerpts, summaries or notes, often from the 18th century. The purpose of the planned edition of documents is to solve this problem. So far the research work of the project-manager in nearly all important archives and libraries from Cividale to Trento and Como has produced more than 150 documents. What catches the eye is that the sources from the archives and their copies and notes in the bibliography are widely scattered, and therefore some surprise can be expected. After three years the documents are planned to be published together with critical annotations as well as the indexes of names and words. Since at the moment no really exact predictions about the number of documents to be edited can be made, some degree of flexibility is necessary. It is envisaged that in the first line the relationships between the patriarchy of Aquileia and Treviso should be presented, secondly those of the upper valley of the Piave (Belluno, Feltre) and thirdly those of Padua, but it seems unrealistic to include also the relationships concerning Vicenza, Verona, Brescia, Trento, Mantua and Como in a project limited to three years. In this way this procedure makes it possible to produce a rounded-off edition ready to be printed even if there should occur a surplus of texts or an excess of work due to problems with documents.
