Abstract Final report

Although there are a number of academic studies on Elfriede Jelinek, there has yet to be a systematic annotated documentation of an oeuvre which has taken on remarkable dimensions over the last 40 years. Nor has the international academic reception of her works been comprehensively gathered. While in 2004 the applicant edited an index of Jelinek`s works, building on some rather sparse bibliographies and listing the works of the author as well as selected studies written in German, from today`s perspective this documentation is insufficient, as important details - such as the different versions of her works, keys to the texts and artistic contexts - could not be considered due to the enormity of the task of producing this initial sur-vey. In 2004 the focus was on a cursory survey of the source material and the bibliographical listing of the works. This bibliography further lacks all of the works Jelinek has produced since being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004 and the dramatically increased interna- tional reception to which this event gave rise. The project Elfriede Jelinek: Work and Impact. An Annotated Bibliography will now, on the basis of the bibliography of 2004, offer a complete annotated and critical bibliographical representation of Jelinek`s oeuvre as well as her international reception in its entirety. In doing so, great care will be taken to consider all of her works as well as the various treatments of those works by other artists. The project will not only provide basic data on these works, but also provide a key to understanding their content; all relevant information such as different versions, intertextual references, context and prizes as well as links to other works will be systematically provided. The project will also cover the content of all of the author`s interviews and their international reception. This will entail not only the creation of the first international list of performances, but also a survey of the entire spectrum of translations and the international academic and media reception. Since Elfriede Jelinek is one of the most significant Austrian writers since 1945 and has oc-cupied a central position on the international literary stage since, at the very latest, receiving the Nobel Prize in 2004, this project is of great relevance for research on Austrian literature as a whole. Only a systematic annotated bibliographical survey of Jelinek`s oeuvre and its reception and the publication of the results can guarantee a reliable collection of sources and provide the foundation for future academic examination of the works of Austria`s only winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

As a part of the project Elfriede Jelinek: Works and Impact. An Annotated Bibliography, an annotated, bibliographical representation of Jelineks full artistic production has been assembled. The bibliography comprises over 1,100 pages that document both Jelineks works as well as the global reception of the author. The annotated data include Jelineks poetry, novels, short stories, plays, radio dramas, screenplays and film scripts, compositions, lyrics for compositions, librettos, essays, speeches, translations, texts for installation art, video projections, and photography projects. In addition to essential data the bibliography contains details on the settings of the texts, incentives, sources, aspects of form, central motifs and themes, intertextual references and publication history. Cross references to other works and relevant subject matter are made available by means of a specially developed reference system. Treatment of Jelineks works by other artists, awards, artistic and scientific core themes, radio and television feature programs as well as interviews with the author are also documented and commentated. The survey of secondary literature on Jelineks life, writing methods and works is particularly extensive. A complete directory of translations and public performances is included. With this comprehensive documentation a uniform body of source material on Jelineks writing and its international impact has become readily accessible, forming the basis for continuing research on all aspects of Elfriede Jelineks creative activity.
