The digital edition of Arthur Schnitzlers (18621931) professional correspondence will be
extended for a third phase starting on May 1, 2025, with an additional four-year project period.
During this phase, the remaining significant correspondences will be gradually published on the
project website: https://schnitzler-briefe.acdh.oeaw.ac.at. In addition to the 45 correspondences
already accessible, the letters exchanged with Otto Brahm, Sigmund Freud, Theodor Herzl,
Heinrich Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Schlenther, Gustav Schwarzkopf, and Stefan Zweig will
now also be available. Completing the previously published correspondences with women writers,
the correspondence with Elsa Plessner will be released as well.
A vast number of letters will be edited for the very first time. Additionally, these and all previously
released correspondence pieces will undergo critical review and comparison with the original
manuscripts held in archives in Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Israel, and the United
States.
Upon project completion, a total of 5,000 pieces of correspondence to and from Schnitzler, with
accompanying facsimiles, will be available to the public and to researchers. These will be indexed
by registers of persons, works, places, and institutions. Additionally, an events register will be
created, providing a new level of integration with Schnitzlers digital diary: https://schnitzler-
tagebuch.acdh.oeaw.ac.at.
The project results will not only be available on the website but will also be preserved in the long-
term archive of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The data can also be easily downloaded from
various GitHub repositories at https://github.com/arthur-schnitzler/, providing a basis for further
research.
