Abstract
Birch pollen is one of the most prevalent triggers of hayfever and allergic asthma in Austria. Allergen
immunotherapy (AIT) is the treatment of choice for a long lasting reduction of this allergy. Among other
immune responses AIT induces the production of protective antibodies in treated patients. By binding to
the allergen these antibodies prevent the induction of allergic symptoms after contact with the allergen.
However, it is not yet known whether the alleviation of allergic reactions requires many different
protective antibodies, or whether a small repertoire is sufficient. Moreover, it is possible that the
repertoire of protective antibodies waxes and wanes or remains stable in the course of treatment. This
project aims to elucidate the composition of allergen-specific antibody repertories in serum samples
from AIT-treated individuals collected before, during, and after completion of therapy. In close
collaboration with our partners at the University of Marburg, we will compare the development of
allergen-specific antibody responses with the effectiveness of AIT in alleviating allergic symptoms.
Thereby, we will learn more about the immune responses that are necessary for successful AIT. The
insights gained in our studies will contribute to develop strategies for more effective therapy and the
prevention of allergies.
