In Ephesos, one of the most significant ancient cities of Asia Minor, stands one of the most remarkable monuments of the Roman Imperial period: the so-called Temple of Serapis. It is among the best-preserved temples of antiquity and can be almost completely reconstructed. Its monumental construction and highly unusual architectural design make it a key monument for understanding ancient architecture and building practices. A new research project is now dedicated to the comprehensive investigation of this unique structure. The aim is to explore the construction, engineering, planning, and use of the temple and to uncover the knowledge of ancient architects embedded within it. At the heart of the project lies the reconstruction of the temples overall structure. Of particular interest is the complex arrangement of the superimposed side corridors, which were accessed via two staircases at the rear of the building, as well as the massive barrel vault that once spanned the interior. The study also seeks to reconstruct the connections between the surrounding halls and the overall layout of the temple complex. The investigations focus not only on architectural questions but also on technical and logistical aspects. These include the transport routes of the marble from the island of Proconnesos in the Sea of Marmara to Ephesos, the construction techniques used during the building process, and possible measures for earthquake resistance. The ancient water management within the structure and the precise organization of the construction work also offer fascinating insights into Roman engineering. A particular focus is placed on understanding the function of specific architectural areas such as the corridors, staircases, and roof space with its so-called appearance doors in the pediment. Their purpose and significance remain uncertain and could provide new perspectives on the religious and ritual practices within the Serapeion. To address these questions, several excavation campaigns are planned in key areas of the site. The fieldwork will be accompanied by detailed architectural documentation using advanced digital methods. Through laser scanning and photogrammetry, a precise 3D model of the temple will be created, enabling an accurate analysis of its construction. This project combines archaeological and architectural research in a close interdisciplinary collaboration. The integration of classical archaeology and architectural analysis forms the foundation for a holistic understanding of this exceptional monument. In the final phase, the results concerning the temples architecture, technology, chronology, and function will be synthesized into a comprehensive study. This work aims not only to expand knowledge of this extraordinary structure but also to set new standards for the study of ancient temple architecture in Asia Minor. The Serapis Temple of Ephesos thus opens a fascinating window into the world of ancient engineering revealing the remarkable technical sophistication and architectural precision achieved by ancient builders nearly two millennia ago.
