Language contacts after the year 1204 created different multilingual situations in the Byzantine Empire. One result of these processes were the loanwords in Greek with representation of different donor languages. Systematic investigations of the loanwords were almost completely ignored by the scientists since the book of Manolis Triandaphyllidis in 1909. This collective publication will close this gap. It deals with the loanwords, which are found in 18 late Byzantine historians and chronicles. The loanwords are examined according to a uniform pattern. First, a basic information is provided from which donor language the word was borrowed. Then the first appearances are mentioned. In the core of the study the context of the use of the word by the selected historians and chroniclers is analyzed. Finally, attention is given to the assimilation of loanwords in the recipient language. An essential part of the book are the indices. Language indices subdivide the loan words according to the possible donor language. Indices of historians are used to identify the proportion of loanwords in the late byzantine historians. According to the classification made by Martin Haspelmath and Uri Tadmor for the project Loanword in the Worlds Languages, the borrowings are divided into 22 lexical- semantic groups. The grammar index points to the popularity of individual morphological forms. In the loanword index an attempt was made to distinguish the foreign words and transcriptions from the assimilated borrowed words.
