Higher speed of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits can be achieved by down scaling of existing device
concepts. The pace of the necessary miniaturizing steps is getting faster and the involved technological effort grows
exponential. On the other hand causes this minituarisation that quantum effects start to play an important role. The
goal of the proposed research is to study the possiblity of a new kind of THz emitters and detectors based on
transitions between quantized states in semiconductor heterostructures.
