The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on February 11 by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. It was created to recognize the important role that women and girls play in science and technology, and focuses on their contributions to research.

For the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), this day is an opportunity to once again to launch a social media campaign highlighting the achievements of women in science and research while also drawing attention to existing challenges. The focus is on different scientific career paths, perspectives, and experiences. In personal quotes, women researchers provide insights into their lives and explore the question of what it means to work in science today. Check out our campaign on our social media channels on February 11 and discover personal quotes and perspectives from women researchers on Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Facebook, and Threads.

FWF career funding for top-level research

The FWF supports researchers with special career development programs, which include targeted measures to promote equality. Support for female researchers is a top priority. The funding offered by the FWF’s career programs, like the Erwin Schrödinger program, ESPRIT, or the FWF ASTRA Awards, includes networking events for female principal investigators to give them an opportunity to exchange ideas on their work as well as financial support for childcare to make it easier to balance a research career with family life.
