In its latest round of approvals, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) gave the green light for 112 new basic research projects, totaling approximately €44.5 million in funding granted. © Unsplash/Terry Vlisidis

At the most recent Scientific Board meeting, the FWF's Scientific Consultants decided on applications from numerous programs, based on the results of international peer review. The 112 approved projects with a total funding amount of around €44.5 million also include projects from international programs, although the final commitments from the partner organizations are still pending.

Sixteen junior researchers were awarded ESPRIT career funding, including 7 researchers who will be relocating to Austria as incoming researchers with this FWF funding.

In the field of transdisciplinary research (#ConnectingMinds program), four consortia qualified for the final jury hearing; the final funding decisions in this program will be made in late June.

Shortlist for FWF ASTRA Awards announced

The pre-selection of candidates for the new FWF ASTRA Awards was also announced at the most recent Scientific Board meeting: 27 advanced postdocs will be presenting their proposals to an international jury at a hearing in late June. The gender distribution of the shortlisted candidates – 14 women and 13 men – is a good starting point for achieving the program’s goal of gender equality in the final funding decisions for the FWF ASTRA Awards.

PEEK funds arts-based research in Austria 

At the May Scientific Board meeting, the FWF also approved three Arts-Based Research (PEEK) applications with a total volume of €1.3 million, as well as an Elise Richter PEEK project with approximately €550,000.
