Open Research Europe (ORE) is a research-led open-access publishing platform that, as of this year, is jointly supported by research funding agencies and academic organizations from eleven European countries.

“The launch of Open Research Europe is an important step toward an open, fair, and sustainable scientific publishing system,” says FWF President Christof Gattringer. “As a research funding organization, we see it as our responsibility to support conditions that ensure scientific quality, strengthen transparency, and provide researchers and the public with equal access to scientific findings.”

A milestone for transparent and fair publishing

The platform’s goal is to make scientific findings, methods, and research processes as open, transparent, and reusable as possible. In addition to traditional research articles, the platform also accepts a variety of other formats, including individual case studies, scholarly essays, and data notes. The wide range of accepted publication formats is intended to help increase the visibility of the diversity of research achievements. Technologically, ORE is based on the open-source software “Open Journal Systems” to ensure a long-term and sustainable infrastructure.

Publish-Review-Curate model

In its peer review process, ORE applies the “Publish-Review-Curate” model. After an integrity check, submitted articles are published immediately and are subjected to open peer review. The reviews and scholarly discussion of the results are documented in a verifiable manner; positively reviewed publications are included in specialized collections. The platform is designed to align with the EU Council conclusions on “high-quality, transparent, open,  trustworthy and equitable scholarly publishing” from 2023.

An international consortium of eleven countries

The member organizations include a total of 17 science and research funding agencies from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Spain. As of this year, the platform is being hosted and operated by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The official contractual partner in Austria is the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Scientific Advisory Board with representation from Austria

In the course of the realignment and expansion of the organization’s leadership, Christine Moissl-Eichinger was recently appointed to the newly formed Scientific Advisory Board of Open Research Europe to represent the Austrian scientific community. This committee is an independent group intended to guide the platform’s leadership and strategic development as it enters its next phase. The 22 members were selected from a pool of 400 high-caliber applicants from across Europe and represent a balanced mix of academic disciplines, genders, and career stages, allowing them to contribute valuable insights from a wide range of perspectives.
