After more than one hundred years of Lycian studies there is an urgent need to present the whole material of the Lycian documents with reference to archaeological, architectural, historical, epigraphical, and linguistic aspects in a comprehensive collection. Through the cooperation of archaeology and linguistics a new perspectiv is made possible. The project involves the critical examination, new exploration cataloguing of all the monuments displaying Lycian linguistic materials. The combination of archaeological and linguistic data aims: +) the classification of the relation between the inscriptions and the inscribed monuments +) the unambigious identification and precise dating of the monuments by means of an analysis of the artistic decorations and the linguistic data +) the determination of the historical and socio-political context of the monuments as well as the better understanding of the social pyramid and of the discussed relation between the Persian administration, local nobles and Lycian cities. The final publication will consist of three volumes (Western, Central, Eastern Lycia) which will contain an edition of the inscribed monuments concerned including archaeological and linguistic commentary, maps, plates (photos). A fourth volume will contain an analytic study of the data. All the information and the data gathered during the project will be put into an electronic data bank. This collection forms the basis of the final publication.
