A new edition of the works of Franz Tumler has been a long overdue desideratum of literary research in the area of the philology of editing. The last edition appeared in the Piper-Paperback series (e.g. Aufschreibung aus Trient 1989), which at least put the most important novels and stories on market again, but has long been out of print and will not be reprinted. For that reason, the Brenner Archives Research Institute has decided to take up the project of producing an edition comprising at least 11 volumes in collaboration with the manuscript division of the German Literature Archives in Marbach am Neckar. The goal of this project is to make each his most important published works available once more with a compact after word and comprehensive commentary upon the origins and development of the text as well as its reception by the public including previously unpublished but relevant materials from Tumler`s extensive posthumous papers. The Brenner Archives will assume responsibility for three volumes in the initial phase of this edition project: Schriften zur Literatur, Der Schritt hinüber and Erzählungen. Collaboration with Dr. Jochen Meyer, the head of the manuscript collection in Marbach, who has assumed responsibility for the volumes: Der Mantel, Der Ausführende and Das Schloß in Österreich is a presupposition for the edition. Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sieglinde Klettenhammer of the University of Innsbruck Department of German Language, Literature and Literary Criticism will edit Aufschreibung aus Trient and a volume with texts about the South Tyrol. Dr. Toni Bernhart of the Free University of Berlin will be responsible for planned the Berlin volume. Publication by the Paul Zsolnay Verlag is assured. The head of the project is in regular contact with the owners of the publication rights, who support the project. Completed preliminary studies for the edition project include: examination of the state of the papers, a transcription of Tumlers letters to Gertrud Fussenegger and Barbara Hoiß`s dissertation on him. It will be a challenge to the project to produce a collection of primary sources including a selection of letters, personal documents, reviews etc., which are so arranged that the edition provide insight into the peculiarities of Tumler`s ways of working that in turn provides a comprehensive picture of his activity as an author and new insight into his place in the literary history of his times.
The main objectives of were the following: In depth analysis and contextualization of Franz Tumlers literary estate, evaluation of the collected data and material, examination of the various versions of the literary works of the author, collection of biographical and contemporary contexts, synopsis of all studies on Tumler and his work; Literary commentary on selected texts including even those texts addressing poetic issues as well as the many stories that have been published many times under various titles and in various media; Transcription of selected materials from the estate where these may be relevant to future scientific work; Neat arrangement and dating of Tumlers text material which is included in the Hermann Stuppäck being hold by the Brenner Archives Research work to scientifically relevant points in the field of Edition Philology, either for text genesis or the classification of names and locations and the contextualization of issues on historical, psychological, philosophical, etc. backgrounds; Publications of the most important benefits of these research activities, preparing a Franz Tumler student edition, which will be published in 10 volumes Cutting-edge insights gained in research have been presented in numerous (national) lectures including also major international conferences, were shown in exhibitions and released in a number of publications including the following books: oDonau.Verzweigt. Schreiben unter und nach dem Nationalsozialismus. Franz Tumler und Arnolt Bronnen. Linz 2008 (="Literatur im Stifter-Haus", Bd. 20).1 oFranz Tumler. Beobachter Parteigänger Erzähler. Hg. von Johann Holzner und Barbara Hoiß. Innsbruck, Wien, Bozen 2010 (=Edition Brenner-Forum, Bd. 6). Franz Tumler: Volterra. Wie entsteht Prosa. Mit einem Nachwort von Johann Holzner. Innsbruck, Wien 2011.2 At the turn of 2010/11, the Haymon Verlag (Innsbruck-Vienna) acquired all use and exploitation rights concerning Tumlers works and thus provided the basic conditions for a major objective of the project, namely the publication of a Franz-Tumler edition (albeit with a few drawbacks ). The first two volumes of the edition have already been published: - Franz Tumler: Nachprüfung eines Abschieds (Investigations of a Farewell). With a commentary and afterword by Johann Holzner. Innsbruck, Wien 2012. -Franz Tumler: Aufschreibung aus Trient (Notes from Trient). With a commentary and afterword by Sieglinde Klettenhammer. Innsbruck, Wien 2012. Two more volumes (Ein Schritt hinüber (One Step Across), ed. by Barbara Hoiß and a volume including texts on Berlin, ed. Toni Bernhart) will be released in 2013; all in all 10 volumes will be published. 1 Danube. Branching. Writing during and after the Nazi Era. Franz Tumler and Arnolt Bronnen.
