The project collects all Roman inscriptions contatining the names of Celtic deities that are currently known in the Roman provinces of Raetia and southern Germania Superior. These inscriptions will be examined and classified from a linguistic, epigraphic-historical and iconographic point of view in regard to the consecration formulas and names of gods used in order to draw conclusions about the religious beliefs of the population in these areas during the Roman Empire. But the infromation possibly gained are not limited to the beliefs alone. For example the material can provide insight into the preferred worship of individual deities by certain professions, social groups or men and women. The results will be published both in book form and in the form of a freely accessible online database. As this project is the third and final research in the area of the provinces Germania Inferior and Germania Superior, the online Die keltischen Götternamen der germanischen Provinzen already includes the results of the two previous projects and will be expanded to include the results of this project. Through the use of a web-based Editor, which prepares the data for transfer to the online database at their recording, the project takes a pioneering role in the search for efficient methods for the creation and maintenance of a scientific database.
