Abstract Final report

The proposed project plans to prepare aspects of medieval cuisine and methods of the Digital Humanities for a predominantly young target group with little affinity to university life. Classically not being the primary target group of science communication, they will be introduced to the work of researchers at a university and to certain contents of the Humanities. Direct communication of research is hard to accomplish with such a target audience. In order to reach the interest of the target group, science is combined with a topic that is thematically not related and still controversial in society. The main product of the project is a series of video clips in the style of a docusoap ("Science Ink.") set in a tattoo studio where the tattoo artist and the researcher talk about their work. In the production of the film clips, special interests of the target group, current video and YouTube trends, explanatory video methods and aspects of science communication are combined. Science enters the conversation via "fade-ins" in which other locations (e.g. office, classroom, and kitchen) are introduced. This framework serves as a communication hub for scientific contents about medieval nutrition, cooking instructions for historical meals and research of the Digital Humanities as well as information about tattooing. The combination with the latter topic not only opens up the scientific disciplines, but also supports the visibility of the video clips in the respective publication media by making them easier to find through the broad search field `tattoos`. The series is primarily published on YouTube and presented in a youth centre in order to actively reach the target group and evaluate the impact of the videos. The video clips will also be cut into smaller content units (explanatory video, cooking video), which are then additionally used within the usual and already tested contexts and distributed via the typical dissemination channels and thus made available to the traditional target groups (people with an affinity for science). In addition to the videos, essayistic summaries of the scientific content and didactic modules for conveying the content at school will be offered. The video clips are provided in combination with an interactive web-app in order to foster the gamebased exploration of the project content. In this way, the possibility of interaction with the knowledge content is given immediately. For `hands on` access to the content, cooking classes will be held in the Open Laboratory of the University of Graz, in which the recipes from the video clips can be cooked in scientific company.

Integrative science communication: "Science Ink". In the project, aspects of medieval culinary arts and methods of digital humanities were prepared for a predominantly young target group with little affinity for universities. These people, who often do not belong to the primary target group of science communication, are to be made more familiar with the work of scientists and with individual contents of the humanities. With such a target audience, the direct communication of research is not the right way. Therefore, science is combined with a thematically unrelated and in society still controversial everyday topic in order to achieve an interest of the target group via this approach. The main product of the project is a series-like sequence of video clips in the style of a docu-soap ("Science Ink."), which has a tattoo studio as its setting. In this setting, the tattoo artist and the scientist talk about their work. In the production of the film clips, special interests of the target group, current video and Youtube trends, explanatory video methods and aspects of science communication were combined; science flows into the conversation via "fade-ins" in which other locations (e.g. office, teaching room, kitchen) were introduced. In this frame story, scientific content on medieval diet, cooking instructions for historical food, and research approaches of Digital Humanities and, of course, information on tattooing are communicated. The combination with the latter topic not only opens up the scholarly disciplines, but also supports the visibility of the video clips in the respective publication media by making them easier to find through the broad search field 'tattoos'. The series clips are primarily published via YouTube and, in order to actively reach the target group and to be able to check the impact, they are presented in a youth center. As derivatives, the video clips are also cut into smaller content units (explainer video, cooking video), which can then additionally be used in the usual contexts already tested and distributed via the usual dissemination channels and thus made available to the usual target groups (people with an affinity for science). Furthermore, in addition to the video products, essayistic summaries of the scientific content and didactic modules for teaching the content in schools will be offered. The video clips will be offered in combination with an interactive WebApp for playful exploration of the project content, so that the possibility of interaction with the knowledge content is given. For a 'hands on' access to the content there were (and are) cooking classes in the Open Laboratory of the University of Graz, where the facts around medieval nutrition and the research of the cooking recipes can be presented and selected recipes can be 'cooked' in scientific accompaniment.
