In der Zeit-Frequenz-Analyse wird ein Signal gleichzeitig im Zeitbereich und im Frequenzbereich untersucht. Zum Beispiel werden eindimensionale Daten durch zweidimensionale Darstellungen wie das Spektrogramm untersucht. Das Spektrogramm zeigt, wie sich die Eigenschaften der Daten mit der Zeit verändern. Zeit-Frequenz-Analyse ist ein großer Forschungsbereich, der mit reiner und angewandter Mathematik zusammenhängt. Die Anwendungen inkludieren unter anderem Audioverarbeitung, wireless communications, Statistik und Datenanalyse. Der Grenzbereich, in dem Zeit-Frequenz-Analyse möglich ist, ist durch die Unschärferelation gegeben. Dieses Projekt behandelt einige Probleme, motiviert durch Anwendungen, bei denen der Unschärfegrenzwert angenähert wird. Konkrete Probleme, die untersucht werden, inkludieren: (a) Datenerfassung und sich bewegende Sensoren (mobile sensing); (b) Zeit-Frequenz-Methoden und Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie.
