Abstract Zusammenfassung

The goal of this project is to better understand the chemical composition of gas-giant planets outside our solar system. In particular, to study the interaction between dynamical and chemical processes in their atmospheres. This project developed new modeling tools and applied them to a sample of real observations to uncover which physical and chemical processes are most important. In particular, we have developed a pipeline to interpret the combined data from space and ground-based telescopes. We analyzed ground-based observations made with the GIANO-B spectrograph for three planets: WASP-80b, WASP-69b, and HAT-P-11b. Our studies revealed the detection of several species in their atmospheres (such as water, carbon monoxide, ammonia, or methane), indicating that these planets either show chemical processes that take their composition out of chemical equilibrium, that their elemental building blocks differ substantially from the solar system expectations, or both. These observations also prompted new observations for WASP-69b with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), data which will be analyzed in the future. As part of our effort to understand how chemical processes shape the atmospheres of exoplanets, we developed Gen TSO, a new simulation tool to plan observations with JWST. Gen TSO allows researchers to estimate the statistical confidence of JWST to detect key atmospheric molecules on exoplanets, and thus, test the capability of JWST to distinguish the signature of different chemical and formation theories. The tool is accessible open-source, making it a practical asset for the community. The models developed in this project offer a new standard for interpreting exoplanet observations, laying the groundwork for more accurate characterizations of planetary atmospheres in the JWST era and beyond.
